Cable Plowing
406 Underground has the plowing equipment and experience to handle all aspects of cable placement, from the largest cable laying projects to the smallest drops.
Cable Plowing from 406 Underground
Cable plows changed the way underground cable is buried. The machine pulls a sharp, vibrating blade through the ground ahead of a chute that places the cable or conduit at the specified depth.
Plowing reduces environmental impact and disruption, minimizes the need for excavation and, once completed, leaves little evidence that a pipe or cable went in at all. It's most effective in open or rural areas with fewer obstacles in the way.
What we do
- Fiber optic cable and innerduct
- Telecom, copper and coax cable
- Power cable and conduit
- Long rural runs and new-development mainline
- Service drops
- Combined plow and bore jobs where crossings are needed
How it works
Route & locate
Existing utilities are located and the plow route is set to avoid conflicts.
Plow
Cable or conduit is fed through the plow chute and placed at the required depth.
Crossings
Roads, driveways and other obstacles are bored rather than cut.
Clean-up
The plow line is rolled and the site restored.
Why it pays
- Fastest placement method for open ground
- Minimal excavation and restoration
- Little visible disturbance afterward
“The crews not only provide accurate bores, but also take responsibility for their actions and clean up after themselves without being asked when leaving a jobsite. Four O Six is also proactive in locating utility crossings… Montana owned and operated, this company has a family touch to it and it shows in their desire to do a good job at a minimal cost.”

Is plowing or trenching better?
Plowing is usually faster and less disruptive for single cables or conduits in open ground. Trenching is better when several pipes go in together or the ground is too rocky or congested to plow.
Can you plow and bore on the same job?
Yes. Most rural routes are plowed with the road and driveway crossings bored.
