Horizontal Directional Drilling
Directional boring is a cost-effective alternative to open excavation and an essential tool in today's environmentally sensitive construction industry. It's what 406 Underground was built on.
Horizontal Directional Drilling from 406 Underground
Whether it's laying a utility distribution line through a residential neighborhood, a transmission line under a sensitive wetland, or a gas line beneath a river, our goal is minimal impact to your property and the environment.
Depending on your need, we can handle a single component or turnkey the entire project. As soil and rock come out of the bore, they're contained and removed quickly, and we work in as tight a footprint as safety permits so traffic and neighborhoods keep moving.
What we do
- Trenchless installation of water lines, air lines, sewer lines and other utilities
- Installation of power, communications and gas/steel lines
- Direct bury of telecommunications and power cable conduits
- Road, highway, driveway, creek and river crossings
- Bores through dirt, cobble and rock, and in tight, confined spaces
- Turnkey projects or a single bore for your crew
How it works
Locate & plan
Utilities are located and potholed, and the bore path, depth and entry/exit pits are planned around what's in the ground.
Pilot bore
A steerable drill head is tracked from the surface by a locator as it follows the planned path.
Ream
The pilot hole is enlarged with a reamer sized to the product being installed.
Pullback & restore
Conduit or pipe is pulled back through the hole and the entry and exit points are cleaned up and restored.
Why it pays
- Minimal surface disruption to traffic, neighborhoods and property
- Reduced cost
- Reduced time
“The crews not only provide accurate bores, but also take responsibility for their actions and clean up after themselves without being asked when leaving a jobsite. Four O Six is also proactive in locating utility crossings… Montana owned and operated, this company has a family touch to it and it shows in their desire to do a good job at a minimal cost.”

When is directional drilling better than trenching?
When you need to cross a road, driveway, waterway, landscaping or other utilities, or when restoring a trench would cost more than the bore. Open, rural runs with few obstacles are often faster to plow or trench.
What can you install with HDD?
Water, sewer, power, gas/steel lines, telecom, fiber and cable conduit, irrigation and poly pipe.
Do you work outside Helena?
Yes. 406 Underground works statewide in Montana and has worked in Wyoming, Idaho, the Dakotas, Colorado and New Mexico.
